A Theory of Music Grade 4 course and two Speech & Performance exams are now available online via the AMEB Learning & Exams platform. Launching today (July 1), these new offerings will make it easier for students and teachers to access quality learning and assessment tools for these syllabuses.
The self-guided grade 4 course is made up of 14 video lessons accompanied by interactive online practice tests and downloadable PDF lesson outlines. This course builds on the knowledge acquired in our grade 1 – 3 courses to help candidates thoroughly prepare for the AMEB Theory of Music Grade 4 exam.
Key features of the AMEB Theory of Music Grade 4 course include access to a larger pool of test questions for each lesson, an in-depth walkthrough of four-part writing and audio examples demonstrating melody writing to a couplet of words.
The grade 4 course is fully integrated with the AMEB Theory of Music: Integrated Course and Workbook Grade 4 publication released in 2020.
As an introductory offer, this course will be available for $29.95 (normally $38.95) for the month of July 2021. Purchases give the candidate access for 12 months from the purchase date with the opportunity to purchase monthly extensions after 12 months.
Also launched today, are the Speech and Performance Theory Grade 5 and 6 online exams. These are in addition to the grade 1 and 7 exams already available on the system with the remaining grades in development. Speech and Performance online theory exams will require the manual installation of software. Please visit our Downloads page for access to the latest version of our software.
All these new releases can be purchased and accessed through the AMEB Learning & Exams website https://exams.ameb.edu.au/

A series of updates, improvements and new feature releases are scheduled for delivery within the coming days and weeks. Further information regarding the updates is available below:
Annual maintenance of the AMEB online exam and course system is scheduled to occur from 12.30am on Friday 15 January until 9.00am Monday 18 January. During this time our IT teams will update the system to support new functionality and make improvements to data management and security. Please note that AMEB online exams and courses will be unavailable for use during the 3-day annual maintenance period.
Launch of the Online Browser
From 9am on Monday 18 January, all AMEB online music theory exams will become accessible via an online browser. This exciting development means that online users of Theory of Music, Music Craft and Musicianship exams will no longer be required to download and install software onto their computers in order to sit or review an online music exam. This also means that AMEB exams will become accessible on computers and devices that were previously not supported by the software such as Surface Pro computers, tablets and smart phones. The browser version of the software has been successfully supporting online theory courses since July 2020.
Enhanced Security for Online Exam Supervision
As of Monday 22 February, we are making some changes to the way supervisors authorise an online exam for a Candidate. In addition to providing their name and phone number, the supervisor will receive a text message containing a numeric code. This code will need to be entered into the online system before the online exam will commence. Users will likely be familiar with this process as it is increasingly being used by online businesses to increase security and assist in proving identities. Support will be available for users who require assistance or are unfamiliar with this style of verification.
Speech and Performance Online Theory Exams
A Grade 1 online theory exam for Speech and Performance will be launched on Monday 18 January. The Grade 7 exam was successfully launched during 2020 and Grades 2-6 will be released later in 2021. At this time, software will need to be downloaded and installed onto the Candidate’s computer in order to access Speech and Performance exams.
For further information regarding updates and new releases to the AMEB Online Exam system, please contact the AMEB Federal Office on 03 8660 5800 or email email@example.com.
As of 1 July 2020, all online music theory courses will become entirely browser-based. Each lesson test will launch in a new browser window. AMEB software will no longer be required for the online courses.
These browser-based tests will allow course candidates to complete their lesson tests on devices such as tablets and smartphones in addition to laptop and desktop computers. This change will make our online courses easier to use and more accessible for anyone who would prefer to use a tablet or smartphone.
This change will only apply for online courses and not online exams. All exams will continue to use the AMEB Exams software.
What does this mean for my course?
There is no need to take any action; your course will continue to be valid. Your course lesson tests will automatically launch in your browser from 1 July, and your Course Key, Course Pin and expiry date will remain the same. You will notice that the lesson tests will look a little different when they open in the browser but will still work as before. Results for these tests and all previous tests will still be available within each lesson.
If you are also enrolled for any online theory exams, you will still need to use the AMEB Exams software to access practice exams and your official exam.
Can I still use the software-based version of the lesson tests?
No – all courses will only be accessible via your browser from 1 July.
